What is Targeted Sports Therapy in Chiropractic Treatment?

April 18, 2016

Chiropractic is an alternative medical treatment often used for pain relief. While it is primarily used for back pain, it can also be used to relieve pain in other parts of the body, including the legs, neck, and arms. Chiropractic can also be used to relieve some kinds of headaches.

A chiropractor or doctor of chiropractic will manipulate the patient’s spine. Chiropractors believe that putting the spine and other parts of the musculoskeletal system in proper alignment will enable the body to heal itself without medication or surgery.

A chiropractor will also treat patients suffering from joint problems caused by trauma or repetitive stress. They will treat people who have conditions affecting their bones, joints, muscles or connective tissues.

What is Targeted Sports Therapy?

Sports therapy, in general, is a collection of treatments designed to help people recover from injuries. Sports therapy clients may have hurt themselves actually playing a sport or by doing something physically active, like gardening.

Targeted sports therapy means that the treatment is tailored for a specific patient with a specific treatment. It is, therefore, a type of personalized medicine. Sports therapy can combine physical therapy with exercise. The physical therapy can include chiropractic and/or massage. The exercises can help patients improve their balance and coordination. Treatment also includes trigger point therapy and ultrasound to ensure optimal results.

What Happens During an Initial Chiropractic Treatment?

If it’s the first time the athlete has visited our facility, they will have to provide their medical history. During this, the patient should describe the nature of their injury and how bad the pain is. They will also have to describe the circumstances that make the pain worse (e.g. raising their right arm). Additionally, the patient should describe any medications they have recently taken, be they prescription, over-the-counter or supplements.

After that, the patient will undergo a chiropractic exam. The chiropractor will administer routine general tests, like pulse or blood pressure, and they will administer physical tests, during which they assess attributes, like the patient’s range of motion and muscle tone.

If the chiropractor deems it necessary, they may also order diagnostic tests, like X-rays. At the end of the visit, the chiropractor should be able to give the patient a diagnosis and treatment plan. In the latter, they will include advice about which exercises will be most helpful, and which they should avoid.

What is Spinal Manipulation?

Also known as chiropractic adjustment, spinal manipulation is what it sounds like. The chiropractor manually moves the patient’s spine. They may press on vertebra to force them back into alignment. The procedure is intended to increase flexibility and reduce pain.
