Look and Feel Rejuvenated with IPL Photofacials

July 4, 2016

Light therapy is becoming more and more popular as a cosmetic facial treatment. The intense pulsed light devices used today deliver a variety of wavelengths through the skin, stimulating collagen production and the creation of healthier tissues. Abbreviated as IPL, intense pulsed light is favored by many because it effectively reduces the appearance of wrinkles and superficial injury scars without the need for surgery or abrasive skin resurfacing procedures.

If you’ve heard about IPL photofacials but don’t know how they work, we encourage you to learn more. We feel that this simple, repeatable cosmetic procedure is one of the easiest ways to turn back the aging clock and rejuvenate the facial skin.

IPL Photofacials vs. Laser Treatment

Lasers are used to cauterize materials. They can cut through metal, wood or solid rock. Gentler laser beams, like the ones used in DVD players, use focused light beams of a single wavelength. On the other hand, IPL devices produce light bursts in a variety of wavelengths, meaning they can be easily calibrated to send energy right through skin tissue without harming it.

Depending on the wavelength, only certain substances will absorb the energy. An IPL device delivers light energy in short pulses, and these light beams are directed to and are absorbed by tissue that is darker and denser than the surface skin. This makes IPL photofacials effective at heating up the lower dermal tissues as well as problem areas, like age spots and injury scars.

How the IPL Photofacial Process Works

We first consult with the client and look at the trouble spots on the face and neck. These could be non-set wrinkles, darkened areas caused by injury, overexposure to the sun or acne scars. We then set up a customized treatment that takes the client’s skin tone and density into account.

The lamp is calibrated to flash a variety of wavelengths, each one targeting a specific density of tissue. The light bursts last only a few milliseconds and are repeated several times. The device is then moved to the next surface region, and the process is repeated.

The energy is absorbed by the darker, denser tissues, and the damage caused by the light energy stimulates the body to go into repair and replacement mode. Subsequent tissue formation is healthier than the problem cells treated by the IPL device. Collagen production also tends to increase, and this is an added bonus for the client.

Advantages of IPL Photofacials

There is no downtime for the client with IPL photofacials. You can resume normal activities at once. In fact, a typical session usually lasts less than 45 minutes, which is why this type of treatment is often referred to as a lunchtime therapy. There is no abrasive resurfacing, and the epidermis is not affected, so there’s no chance of peeling or discoloration.
