Light therapy is not a new skin treatment technique, but it has evolved significantly over the years and now promises better results than in past decades. The newly developed instruments used in intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy are more easily controlled and calibrated, making this type of skin rejuvenation procedure available to a greater percentage of the population. IPL photofacials involve the use of light energy. Various wavelengths are produced, and these beams of light target specific areas of concern such as age spots, melasma, rosacea, freckles, and even moderately-sized wrinkles.
Using Light Energy
An IPL photofacial targets discolorations in the skin. It also stimulates the production of collagen, so most of the fine wrinkles and crow’s feet on the facial skin can be made less apparent. Unlike a traditional laser resurfacing treatment, IPL photofacials use a device that sends energy directly through the epidermis. No skin is ablated, and the heating up of the lower dermal layers and subcutaneous tissues kickstarts a slow but steady skin rejuvenation process.
The device used can be calibrated to send beams of light consisting of several wavelengths onto and through the skin surface. The device is calibrated according to the client’s skin tone, skin thickness, and the tone of any denser, darker tissue such as an injury scar or age spot.
Certain wavelengths will be absorbed by these darker tissues, and the energy becomes heat energy. Capillaries constrict, and some of the darker tissue is slightly cauterized. The constriction of capillaries lightens up some of the darker tissue, and any cells damaged by the light energy are discarded.
Consultation and Treatment
An IPL photofacial treatment session can be performed in the comfort of our office. It all starts with an initial consultation. The actual treatment is very simple. A series of treatment sessions is typically required in order to achieve maximum results. The increase in collagen production and the discarding of damaged tissues continues for some time after the treatment schedule has been completed.
If you live in NYC or the surrounding area, you don’t have to put up with scarring, blemishes, age spots, or non-set wrinkles. Our IPL photofacials may very well give you the results you desire.
