IPL Photofacials for Aging Skin

May 1, 2017

Understanding how IPL photofacials can help aging skin becomes easier when you have a little background knowledge about the things that cause the skin to look older in the first place. After that, the method used for rejuvenating the skin with an IPL photofacial will start to make sense.

If you were asked to make a list of the things that cause the skin to appear older, lines and wrinkles would likely be at or near the top of that list. Other things like sagging skin and the presence of dark spots might make the list as well.

When you look in the mirror regularly, you might not notice much of a change from one day to the next. However, if you compare a recent picture of yourself with one that was taken a number of years ago, you can likely see a much larger difference. It is similar to sitting on your front porch watching the grass grow. You don’t notice it even though it is happening. Realizing that kind of change has taken place in your skin can leave you searching for ways to restore a younger look.

Some of the signs of aging, like lines, wrinkles and sagging skin, can be attributed to the skin becoming looser over the years. This happens when the collagen levels begin to drop. Collagen is a protein that is found in the lower layers of the skin. It is naturally produced by the body, but not always in the same quantity. With age, the production rate of the substance slows. The subsequent decline in the amount of collagen present is what leads to loose skin. Collagen helps to hold tissue together and provide fullness and tightness to the skin. When these properties diminish, the wrinkles and sagging are bound to develop.

IPL photofacials are proven methods by which the skin can be tightened non-surgically. They are done when a device that emits intensified light pulses is passed across the surface of the skin. As the light energy is absorbed into the skin, it creates heat. In response to the heat, the dermis, or the layer of skin beneath the surface, will start to grow collagen at a faster rate than it does without the therapy. This will restore tightness to the skin, eliminating lines, wrinkles and sagging that are the products of loose skin.

IPL photofacials can also help with the removal of dark spots that may have developed across the skin’s surface. These spots are actually places of concentrated melanin that developed because of too much sun exposure over the years. Since melanin supplies pigment, concentrated patches of it show up as dark spots. The energy from the therapy will help to disperse the melanin. Doing so returns a more even tone and texture to the skin.
